Debra Harden

Debra Harden, Professional Development Director for the Georgia School Superintendents Association, is a career Georgia educator. She was the last elected and the first appointed school superintendent of Oconee County. Prior to being superintendent, she held a variety of leadership positions, including teacher, Director of Special Education, Principal, and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. After her retirement in 1999, she taught for Piedmont College and coordinated Piedmont’s graduate programs offered in several Gwinnett County schools. She has been with GSSA since 2001.


Dr. Harden received regional and state recognition as an outstanding leader. In 1997 she was named a charter member of the prestigious BellSouth/CLSR Superintendents Leadership Network and in 1999 she was named Georgia's Superintendent of the Year.

She received her B.S. and M.Ed. from Valdosta State College and completed her Ed. D. at the University of Georgia in 1982.Debra is active in a variety of professional, civic and church organizations. She served as President of the Girls Scouts of Northeast Georgia from 2005 – 2008. She lives in Watkinsville, Georgia, with her husband, Amrey. They have one son.
